Me as a first-grader

My first book, "The Rooster and The Cow"

Sketching in the mountains

Biography

Early morning at Cannon Beach. (Photo by Donna McCoy)

I've been writing and illustrating stories ever since the first grade. I still have my first book--The Rooster and the Cow (I was writing about birds even then!) I love watching and drawing birds--I take a sketch book with me wherever I go. My favorite places to watch birds are mountain lakes, and right in my backyard!

I live on the Oregon coast with my family: my husband, Greg, my wonderful children Keith and Jenna, and my dogs Kristi and Baron. A variety of fish share our home both inside and out. We also spend time in a log house in central Oregon, where I can sit for hours sketching moutain birds

What I hope to share with young readers is my love and awe of wild creatures and wild places. There is mystery and magic out there, if we just take the time to see.
